Former Maryland quarterback Frank Reich could have a new home.

According to reports, Doug Pederson is targeting Reich as a potential option in Philadelphia. Pederson was reportedly tabbed as the Eagles new head coach late last week and he appears to have significant interest in Reich to be their new offensive coordinator.

According to Marcus Hayes of the Daily News, Reich is Pederson’s first choice to assume the role as the offensive coordinator. Other names have also been thrown into the mix, including former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress and Pat Shurmur.

Reich spent the past two seasons as the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator before being fired on Jan. 4. The former Maryland quarterback was in the running for the Terrapins head coaching job following the 2015 season before the program ultimately chose D.J. Durkin.

Reich spent his first two seasons in College Park as the primary backup to Boomer Esiason. In 1984, Reich got the chance to start and had a very strong campaign.

The New York native completed 63.9 percent of his passes while tossing nine touchdowns. Reich’s most noteworthy performance was rallying Maryland back from a 31-0 halftime deficit against Miami (Fla.) on Nov. 10, 1984. Reich ended up throwing for 260 yards and three touchdowns, including a 68-yard bomb to wideout Greg Hill for the go-ahead touchdown.

Reich ended up being drafted 57th overall in the 1985 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He would go on to play in the NFL for 13 years with nine of them coming with the Bills. He threw 40 career touchdown passes during his professional career.

Reich would be an interesting fit in Philadelphia, but could have a great deal of success because of his familiarity with the quarterback position. After all, it appears that the Eagles could hang onto Sam Bradford even with Chip Kelly out of the picture.

If the organization looks to make an outside hire, it looks like Reich could be the guy. We’ll continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds.
