No. 2 Jamie Byrd

South Florida’s offense certainly doesn’t strike fear in many opposing teams. However, there is one player on the defensive side of the ball that teams need to be aware of. Jamie Byrd is a hard-hitting safety that is the face of the Bulls defense. Byrd led South Florida in tackles (95) a season ago and already has nine and a pass defended in 2015.

The Dade City, Fla. native is a very punishing athlete that can break up just about any pass that comes in his general direction. Byrd also had three interceptions in 2014 and forced a fumble against Maryland in last year’s meeting when he knocked the ball out of Brandon Ross’ grasp. Byrd is a playmaker that Maryland is going to have to account for on every play. Even though he only has one year of collegiate experience, Byrd did spend time at Iowa Western Community College, which has churned out several successful Division I players, including former Terp wideout Deon Long.
