Maryland surprises top-ranked Ohio State in first half of Big Ten Tournament
Well, this is not what Ohio State fans expected, but Maryland fans always believed this was possible. After a thrilling win against nine-seed Illinois, the Terrapins had the daunting task of taking on the number one-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes.
Maryland was up for the challenge and it showed in the first half. The Terrapins went into halftime up by eight over the Buckeyes, one of the top teams not just in the Big Ten, but in the country. Two starting Terrapins ended the first half in double digits with 10 points each. Jakia Brown-Turner and Faith Masonius are leading with team with Masonius going perfect from the field in the first half.
Maryland capped off thier big second quarter with a buzzer-beater to give this team the eight-point advantage going into the long break.
There is still a lot of game left, but the Terrapins are leaving it all on the court. Ohio State ended their regular season on a tough game against the Iowa Hawkeyes when the whole world was watching Caitlin Clark. It might be safe to say they are still recovering from that game.
Maryland outshot and outrebounded the Buckeyes with the Terrapins grabbing 29 boards versus Ohio State's 15. Buckeye stars Jacy Shelton and Cotie McMahon were held to just eight and five points in the first half. Both teams shot similarly from beyond the three-point line both shooting around 30 percent.
The Buckeyes held the lead after the first quarter 17-12 but the Terrapins came back roaring outscoring the Ohio State 26-13 thanks to great shooting in the paint. Stay tuned to see if the Terrapins can pull the upset off over the Buckeyes.
