Maryland Terrapins' all-time Sweet 16 record

Following Derik Queen's buzzer-beating shot against Colorado State, Maryland is destined for a date with Florida in the Sweet 16.

Well, it took one of the most nail-biting sequences in recent March Madness memory, but thanks to a Derik Queen buzzer-beater, Maryland is heading back to the Sweet 16.

[Was it a travel? Maybe, but that doesn't negate it from being the best moment — by far — from this year's tournament thus far.]

After a gritty, hard-fought battle against No. 12 seed Colorado State, the Terrapins won't find their path to glory getting any easier in the next round. They'll have to match up with the West Region's No. 1 seed, the Florida Gators, who just dispatched the back-to-back national champion Connecticut Huskies.

Maryland's all-time Sweet 16 record

Maryland has been pretty good at basketball for a long time. Technically, their Sweet 16 appearances date as far back as 1958, when Bud Millikan led the Terrapins to that round in the 24-team NCAA University Division I basketball tournament. Elgin Baylor was named that tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Maryland hasn't been all that successful once reaching the final 16, though they do have that 2002 National Championship to show for their efforts.

Overall, this is Maryland's 15th appearance in the Sweet 16, with a pitiful 2-12 record in the round historically. It's impressive that the program has made it this far so often — that Gary Williams era was special — but the Terrapins will be hard-pressed to improve on that unsightly record against the Gators.

Florida hasn't been to the Sweet 16 since 2017, but they look like a freight train this season. The SEC tournament champions have lost just four times all year and field the second-best offense in terms of efficiency in the nation. They aren't lacking on the other side of the ball, either, with a unit that ranks 11th in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Still, anything is possible with the famed "Crab Five" starting lineup. Queen is the epicenter of everything Maryland does, while Ja'Kobi Gillespie, Rodney Rice, Selton Miguel, Julian Reese provide ample support on both the offensive and defensive end. Each of those players is averaging at least 12.0 points per game this year while playing at least 28 minutes.

And even if the team falls to Florida, head coach Kevin Willard and company should be commended for restoring Maryland's postseason legacy. After nearly a decade of being absent from the tournament's second weekend, the Terrapins are back in the Sweet 16.
