How innovative will Walt Bell get?

Maryland’s offense didn’t get much of a chance to get off the ground in 2016 aside from their stellar rushing attack. Quarterback play was a huge issue for Maryland as Perry Hills battled injury for the bulk of the season and Tyrrell Pigrome was still learning the offense.

Offensive coordinator Walt Bell has been labeled as an offensive guru and was very creative during his time at North Carolina and Arkansas State. However, Maryland fans only saw glimpses of that fact last season.

With a mobile quarterback like Pigrome and a few great running backs, Bell has the pieces to get really creative and incorporate some gadget plays. During his time at Arkansas State, Bell liked to run a fast-paced tempo that we did see at times in 2016.

Pigrome has a full offseason under his belt, so the training wheels can come off a bit in terms of running the offense. It’ll be interesting to see if Bell tries to pull any trick plays off against Texas.
