Maryland fall sports start their seasons with a bang
By Wesley Brown
While most fans wait for football to start, Maryland has been running past the competition in their fall sports.
Men’s Soccer
After going 3-0 in their exhibition matchups, coach Sasho Cirovski led his squad to the West Coast to open up their season.
Santa Clara played host to Maryland, and gave them a test. An opening goal gave Santa Clara the lead, but Maryland responded with three goals in the first half to take a commanding lead.
Another set piece put Santa Clara within one, but Maryland struck again to take the game 4-2. Midfielder Jake Rozhansky recorded two goals and an assist while forward Eryk Williamson had a goal and an assist for the Terrapins.
Scoring has been coming in bunches for the Terps so far this fall, which means fans will have to hope those times come often.
Women’s Soccer
In his second season as head coach, Ray Leone continues his task of pushing Maryland women’s soccer towards greatness.
Last season, the Terps ended the year with a 3-15 mark. After three matches this year, Leone has Maryland at 3-0, thanks to the play of some magnificent freshmen.
Mikayla Dayes of Ontario leads the squad with three goals in three games. Wins over the likes of Drexel, Navy, and Gardner-Webb show that this team just may be primed to compete in Big Ten play.
Women’s Volleyball
The Maryland women’s volleyball team opened their season at home with the “Maryland Invite”.
The Terps have continued their streak now of four straight seasons starting 3-0. Maryland has not ended with a winning record in those last three seasons, or at all since 2012-2013.
Next: Where could the Terps pull off upsets?
Coach Steve Aird and company have three more invitationals to complete before Big Ten play begins on Sept. 20.
