Cole Field House was a landmark basketball venue for decades and now it marks a new era for the Maryland.

On Wednesday, the Terrapins unveiled the new Cole Field House to the general public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and it could change the landscape for the program.

The university also broke ground on the second phase of the project, which included the Center for Sports Medicine and Health and Human Performance.

“This building is going to be a game-changer for us, it’s going to be a collaborative laboratory and make us leaders in the field,” coach D.J. Durkin said on Wednesday. “Thank you to all the people whose generosity made this possible, your impact is greater than you’ll ever know.”

Cole Field House is the perfect way to help transition into the new era of Maryland football under Durkin.

Durkin came to College Park as a hot name in coaching circles based on his enthusiasm and ability to recruit. After one full season, he’s definitely lived up to the billing.

The Terps went 6-7 in Durkin’s first campaign and reached a bowl game. In addition, Maryland put together a top 25 recruiting class in 2017 and are well on their way to another stellar class in 2018.

There’s no debating that Durkin and his staff are phenomenal recruiters and have done a tremendous job on the trail so far. However, Cole Field House is another ace that they can pull out of their sleeve when pitching the program to prospective recruits.

In the past, they could just talk about Cole Field House and explain what it will offer upon completion. Now recruits can get a first hand look at the state-of-the-art facility and what it has to offer.

The impact of a gorgeous training facility can’t be overstated.

Look at Alabama when it comes to football and Kentucky when it comes to basketball. When recruits visit those schools, they’re oftentimes blown away by these facilities that are second to none.

Maryland now has a state-of-the-art facility that can contend with any in the Big Ten. Wednesday marks the start of something special and the Terps could definitely be on the uptick if results start happening on the gridiron.
