Maryland Football: Terps around NFL Training Camp
By Chris Bengel
Vernon Davis
Current Team: Washington Redskins
2016 Stats: 44 receptions/583 receiving yards/two touchdowns/13.3 yards-per-catch
The Skinny: Just two years ago, Davis’ career was thought to be near the end. He registered just 38 receptions splitting time between the 49ers and the Denver Broncos. He did win a Super Bowl with the Broncos, but wasn’t a big-time contributor during their playoff run. However, Davis had a resurgent year with his hometown Redskins in 2016. It ended up being his best season in three years.
Washington has turned out to be the perfect situation for Davis at this stage in his career. He plays second fiddle to Jordan Reed, but still is a huge part of the offense. Davis still has a little bit of explosiveness to his game and filled in admirably when Reed was banged up for a few games last season. He had multiples catches in all but four games a season ago, so he’s clearly still a factor and a reliable target for quarterback Kirk Cousins. Look for similar statistics from Davis especially with DeSean Jackson gone.
