The Maryland basketball program was thought to be finished with their 2017 recruiting class.
According to NextUpRecruits, the Terrapins are one of several teams that have reached out to former Ohio State signee Braxton Beverly. Beverly has reportedly also heard from the likes of Clemson, NC State, UMass, VCU, and Western Kentucky.
On Friday, Beverly announced that he was decommitting from Ohio State and has been released with his letter of intent.
It appears that NC State could be the favorite. Beverly’s coach at Hargrave Military Academy is now an assistant on Kevin Keatts’ staff with the Wolfpack.
In 2017, the Terps have already brought in forward Bruno Fernando and guard Darryl Morsell. It appeared that Turgeon was moving forward as if his 2017-18 backcourt would consist of Anthony Cowan, Kevin Huerter, Morsell, and Dion Wiley.
With Melo Trimble and Jaylen Brantley gone, Maryland is definitely going to need a suitable backup to Cowan. He’ll likely handle the majority of the ball-handling duties, but it looks like Morsell could get first dibs on backup duties.
On the other hand, Turgeon had alluded to the fact that he hadn’t closed the door on bringing in another guard in 2017 if he found the right fit.
Maryland already has begun to recruit the guard position in the 2018 class. North Carolina four-star guard Aaron Wiggins committed to the program last month.

Turgeon certainly always likes to have plenty of options in the backcourt. Doing his due dilligence on a player like Beverly certainly isn’t a surprise even if he doesn’t end up luring him to College Park.
