Maryland Basketball: Top target Prentiss Hubb has eventful weekend
By Chris Bengel
Prentiss Hubb certainly had a lot going on over the weekend.
Hubb, one of Maryland’s top 2018 targets, is down to his top four schools while also turning in a solid performance at the UAA II tournament in Indianapolis.
According to Irish Sports Daily, Hubb is considering Maryland, Notre Dame, Villanova, and Virginia. The Gonzaga (D.C.) guard had announced his top six schools, which also included Kansas and Syracuse.
Kansas and Syracuse didn’t come to scout Hubb during the start of the live period, which could explain their absence from his latest list. Irish Sports Daily also stated that Hubb was trying to take an official visit to Notre Dame while he was in Indianapolis.
Hubb plays for DC Premier on the Under Armour circuit. Over the weekend, he averaged 7.0 points (38.0 percent shooting), 5.0 assists, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals.
In addition, the four-star guard didn’t register a single turnover.
Hubb’s numbers may not have been earth-shattering from an offensive standpoint, but he played well at times. His best performance came on Friday when he scored 13 points (5-of-12 shooting) while dishing out a game-high seven assists and grabbing four rebounds.
He also recorded four steals in a 73-62 win over the Houston Defenders.
Over the next two games, Hubb only scored 8 points. However, he did record eight assists in Sunday’s 74-47 win over New Heights.
According to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Hubb is rated as the No. 37 overall player. He’s also ranked as the fifth-best shooting guard and top player in the District.
It’s pretty clear why Hubb is one of the top targets for the Terrapins.
Hubb is a very athletic guard that possess tremendous ball-handling ability. At 6’3, it’s extremely impressive to watch him glide up and down the floor.
The lefty guard does have plenty of range despite shooting just 25 percent from three over the weekend. Hubb excels with his pull-up jumper and it has become a huge asset to his overall game.
While he’s viewed as a combo guard, it’s clear that he can play both positions. That’s also one of the big reasons that Hubb has so many high-profile suitors.
It looks like it could be a two-horse race between Maryland and Villanova for Hubb’s services. The Wildcats have Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins graduating and Jalen Brunson will be a junior next season.
On the other hand, the Terps could definitely use another ball-handler next to Cowan. By the time Hubb would be in College Park, Cowan will be a junior.
Hubb would eventually play alongside another combo guard in former Mount Saint Joseph (Md.) standout Darryl Morsell. Morsell will be a freshman this coming fall.
Hubb is definitely going to be Mark Turgeon’s top priority until the Gonzaga star makes a decision. It doesn’t appear that there’s a timetable for Hubb to decide.

With the amount of success that Maryland has had with local guards under Turgeon, there’s certainly a strong chance that Hubb could end up in College Park.
