The secondary has been one of Maryland’s bigger priorities on the recruiting trail.

On Thursday evening, the Terrapins came closer to landing a key asset. Simon Gratz (Pa.) cornerback Kenny Bennett released his top three schools.

Bennett’s top three consisted of Maryland, Pittsburgh, and Temple.

According to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Bennett is rated as the 37th best cornerback in the state of Pennsylvania. He was also ranked as the186th best cornerback in the nation.

The Terps just offered Bennett on June 16 and Bennett also received an offer from Virginia Tech last month.

Maryland currently has both of the Crystal Ball predictions for Bennett’s services. According to Ahmed Ghafir of InsideMDSports, Bennett currently doesn’t have an official visits planned.

Defensive backs coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim is heading up Bennett’s recruitment. Bennett is one of Maryland’s top 2017 secondary targets along with Riverdale Baptist (Md.) cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields.

The Terps already have pledges from four-star cornerback Deon Jones (Potomac, Md.) and three-star cornerback Fofie Bazzie (Quince Orchard, Md.).

Cornerback is definitely a huge priority given where Maryland currently stands at the position. Will Likely will be a senior in 2016 along with Alvin Hill and Jarrett Ross.

The Terps do have some young talent at cornerback with J.C. Jackson and Darnell Savage Jr. still having three years of eligibility remaining. If Jackson can establish himself as a star this fall, Maryland will be in good shape.

Maryland has attacked the Philadelphia area pretty hard in recent years on the recruiting trail. Sophomore wideout D.J. Moore hails from Imhotep (Pa.), so there certainly are connections to aide the Terps in their pursuit of Bennett.
