The Maryland football team is entering a new regime as the Terrapins now have D.J. Durkin at the helm.

Durkin is a defensive-minded coach that comes to College Park with a strong pedigree. The new Maryland coach served as a defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan and Stanford and Urban Meyer at Florida.

Durkin replaces Randy Edsall who was the definition of mediocrity before he was fired last October. From a recruiting standpoint, the Terps have already seen a vast improvement from the Edsall regime.

During his press conference at Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday, Durkin stated that positions are definitely up for grabs.

“We’re not deciding things based on who’s a freshman and who’s a senior,” Durkin proclaimed. “It’s a competitive environment every day and we set it up that way for a reason. You earn what you get. Nothing is handed to you.”

There are some positions where it’s pretty easy to forecast who will be starting when the season begins.

However, there are several where there’s going to competition. Here are the five position battles to watch during training camp for the Terps.
