Maryland Soccer: Patrick Mullins traded to D.C. United
By Chris Bengel
Patrick Mullins is coming back to the area where he had a tremendous amount of success during his college days.
On Wednesday evening, the New York City Football Club traded Mullins to D.C. United for general and targeted allocation money, as well as an international roster slot.
During the 2016 season, Mullins had registered zero goals and an assist in just seven appearances. This comes only a year removed from starting 11 matches for the MLS franchise.
Mullins is on his third team in three MLS seasons.
He was originally selected 11th overall by the New England Revolution in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. Mullins started 14 of 21 games as a rookie and recorded four goals and an assist for the Revolution.
Despite a strong rookie campaign, Mullins was left unprotected in the 2014 MLS Expansion Draft. The New York City FC selected Mullins with the fourth overall pick.
In 2015, Mullins started 11 games for New York City FC and scored six goals to go along with four assists. His six goals were second on the team.
The 2016 season hasn’t been quite as kind to Mullins as he’s received limited playing time. Part of the reason for that is the fact that international star David Villa is having a monster season with 13 goals so far.
Mullins will be joining a D.C. United squad that is second-to-last in goals with just 18 through 22 games. D.C. United currently has a 5-7-7 record, which is seventh out of the 10-team Eastern Conference.
Mullins will play closer to Maryland, where he starred for four years. The Louisiana native finished his career with the second-most goals (47) and points (119) in program history.
Next: Ty Johnson will try to stand out
During his junior and senior seasons, Mullins took home the Hermann Trophy, which is annually given to the nation’s top player. He was the first men’s back-to-back winner in 17 seasons.
