Maryland Basketball: Checking in on the 2016 recruiting class
The Maryland basketball program has a very talented 2016 recruiting class coming in.
See how these players are doing in their final high school season.
Coach Mark Turgeon and the Terrapins will bring in a recruiting class that is No.6 in the Big Ten and No.28 overall, according to 247Sports. The class includes two four-star prospects that will bring depth to the Terps backcourt.
Anthony Cowan (PG, St. John’s College High School)
Cowan is arguably one of the top guards in the Washington D.C. area. He is rated a four-star by 247Sports and listed as the No. 56 player in the 2016 class. During the 2015-16 season, Cowan is averaging 23.1 points-per-game and has converted 49 three pointers. He has helped St. John’s to become a top 10 basketball team in the nation.
Cowan is an excellent scorer that causes major problems for his opponents, and is also a solid three pointer shooter. Another thing that makes Cowan a hard player to guard is his ability to attack the rim and draw the foul. That’s why he tends to go to the free throw line at such a high clip.
Cowan had a lot of big scoring games this season. He scored 32 points when St. John’s played Bishop O’Connell (Va.) and Paul VI (Va.). When St. John’s played DeMatha (Md.), Anthony scored 26 points even though his team was defeated.
After he was snubbed from the McDonald’s All-American Game, Cowan scored 19 against Paul VI and 40 points against St. Francis (GA). That St. Francis team featured five-star guard Kobi Simmons, who is committed to Arizona. It was the second time in Cowan’s high school career he scored 40 points in a game as he did it last season against Bishop O’Connell.
Cowan will be the another guard that came from the WCAC (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) to play for the Terps. Current Maryland guard Melo Trimble played for Bishop O’Connell during his high school days. If Trimble decides to go pro after this season, Cowan will be a solid replacement.

Kevin Huerter (SG, Shenendehowa High School)
Huerter is rated a four-star by 247Sports and is listed as the No. 63 player in the country. Before committing to Maryland, Huerter had offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Villanova, and others.
Huerter has nice size at 6’5 which allows him to play the both guard positions or the small forward position. Just like Cowan, he is a solid three-point shooter and passer. He does have a small frame so he needs to get a little stronger.
The New York native didn’t make a household name for himself until his junior year of high school. That was the same season he led Shenendehowa to their first state championship in 28 years. Huerter scored 25 points in the championship game to propel his team ti victory.
During the 2015-16 season, he has helped Shenendehowa to a 17-0 record. Huerter is averaging more than 20 points, eight rebounds, and six assists per game. In addition to that, Huerter has made more than 40 three pointers. Huerter scored 29 points and made five three-pointers against Columbia on Jan. 15.
With guard Rasheed Sulaimon leaving after this season, Hueter could be a strong replacement. His versatility will help the Terps during his time in College Park.
