Over the last four years, Niko Amato was a fixture in the cage for Maryland.
However, as the Terrapins turned the page on one of the more successful classes in school history, senior goalie Kyle Bernlohr opened the season in net with one of the more memorable performances in recent years.
Bernlohr was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after stopping 12 shots against Navy on Saturday. The Ohio native held the Midshipmen to one goal and didn’t allow that goal for the first 38:06 0f the game.
Bernlohr’s performance was very impressive due to the fact that Navy exploded for 21 goals in their season opener against VMI the week before. It was also the first time since 1931 that Maryland held Navy to just one goal.
Leading up the opener, it was a tossup between Bernlohr and redshirt freshman Dan Morris as to who would get the start in goal for the Terps.
Maryland got off to a great start in the Big Ten. The Terps will hit the road next Saturday to face Yale, who they have only lost to one occasion.
