The Maryland Terrapins football team landed their first commitment in the 2015 recruiting class last fall. Linganore offensive lineman E.J. Donahue pledged to the Terps right after their crushing loss against Clemson on October 26.
After missing out on a bevy of local recruits in the last few months, Maryland landed their second commitment of the 2015 class in the form of St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) running back Deltron Sands on Friday evening. The Florida native announced his decision via his Twitter account, despite being a longtime Terps lean and planned to announce his decision shortly after Maryland’s Spring Game in April.
According to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Sands is rated as a three-star prospect and ranked as 102nd best tailback in the country. The star running back also had offers from Cincinnati, Syracuse, and Wake Forest. He also had interest from Miami, Michigan, and Pittsburgh.
Sands carried the ball 51 times for 639 yards and eight touchdowns this past season.
This is a commitment that is very important for Maryland. After 2014 running back commit Johnathan Thomas decommitted and ended up at Penn State, Maryland didn’t have a tailback recruit. Brandon Ross and Albert Reid will be juniors this season, so having a running back come in during their senior season is huge.
