Xavier University Transfer Dezmine Wells Linked To Maryland
Dez Wells, formerly of Xavier University, is in the process of trying to find a new home to continue his college basketball career and apparently he has some interest in the Terps. Wells, according to a post by Mike Hughes of InsideTheVille.com on the 24/7 Sports network, will be taking visits this weekend to three schools before making a decision on Monday. In addition to Maryland Wells will take visits to both Memphis and Louisville.
This has all come about since Wells was expelled from Xavier University last week amid allegations of a sexual assault. Yesterday, however, Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters stated on a local radio show in Cincinnati that no charges would be filed against Wells after a grand jury decided to pass on the case and that the decision made by Xavier to expell him was “fundamentally unfair”.
Wells, a rising sophomore, would have three years of eligibility wherever he chooses to continue his collegiate career. While it is clear that he should not have been expelled from Xavier that does not mean that the NCAA will grant him any sort of waiver to play immediately at his new school. Even though classes have begun at Maryland Wells could still technically get admitted, which is why he will be moving so quickly with these visits and his subsequent decision on where to transfer. The date that he would need to officially get into school before would be September 12th as that is the last date students can choose to “add/drop” classes.
Adding Wells to the fold would create a bit of a logjam in the backcourt as the Terps are not hurting for depth there at all but I am of the opinion that you can never have enough talent on your roster. Especially when the potential is there to add a player the caliber of Wells as he was a top-50 recruit coming out of Hargrave Military Academy by way of Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C. (Otherwise known as where John Wall and C.J. Leslie played in high school). In his lone year as a Xavier Musketeer Wells averaged 26 minutes per game and a shade under 10 points per contest. He would have been the returning leading scorer for a Xavier team that went to the Sweet 16 last season. Not bad for a potential early September pick up for Mark Turgeon and his staff.
It is not yet known what day Wells will be visiting the Maryland campus but if it is Saturday and he is at the home opener for the Terps football team be sure to let Dez know how much we would love to see him in the red, yellow and black of Maryland!
Update:
According to Evan Daniels of Fox Sports Dezmaine Wells is currently on the University of Kentucky’s campus visiting the Wildcat program. Wells will spend Friday visiting the Memphis and will visit Maryland on Saturday. Louisville is officially out of the running as they do not have any scholarships available. Wells is expected to make his decision sometime on Monday.
