Five things Maryland fans should be thankful for in 2016
By Chris Bengel
Mark Turgeon
The Maryland men’s basketball program hasn’t had to think about a new head coach in a long time.
However, shortly after the 2010-11 season, Hall of Fame coach Gary Williams abruptly retired and left the Terps with a huge hole to fill.
Maryland swung for the fences and went after several high-profile such as Arizona’s Sean Miller. When it was all said and done, the Terps landed a very under-the-radar but established head coach in Mark Turgeon.
Turgeon had spent the last four seasons at Texas A&M where he accumulated a 97-40 record with the Aggies. The Aggies reached the NCAA Tournament in all four of those seasons.
While his tenure at Maryland started off very slow, Turgeon has really improved the program. He has reached the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons and won at least one game in the tournament.
Turgeon and his staff have recruited exceptionally well and brought in some of the top talent in the DMV and beyond. Anthony Cowan, Justin Jackson, Jake Layman, Diamond Stone, and Trimble among others.
Turgeon is one of the best things to happen to this program in quite some time. He’s a very accomplished and talented coach that has elevated Maryland back in the conversation for one of the top teams in the nation on a consistent basis.
Maryland fans should be very grateful that Turgeon calls College Park home.
