Film Review – Jimmy Stewart

Maryland just received their 16^th commitment of the 2011 class in Jimmy Stewart. So, who is he?

Looking at his highlight tape, he’s a hybrid player with a lot going for him. He plays wide receiver and outside linebacker with some defensive end for Island Coast High School in Cape Coral, Fla. Last season, he finished with 45 tackles, eight sacks, and a fumble recovery, according to Maxpreps.com, although it looks like the stats are incomplete.

Immediately, what pops out at you is his good pass rushing ability coupled with his raw speed. One play in particular, he’s met and blocked well by the right tackle, but is able to power through the much larger player and able to chase down the quarterback for the sack, showcasing his strength and speed in the same play.

Stewart has good tackling ability too, and seems to possess a certain amount of tenacity on the football field. During many of the plays on his tape, he was seemingly stopped by a blocker, but fought through to make the big play.

Only two of Stewart’s plays on his tape show him playing wide receiver, but they help show his speed and field awareness.

He’s listed on Scout as a defensive end, but it’s hard for me to see him playing anywhere but outside linebacker at Maryland. The Terps currently don’t have any other outside linebackers among their 2011 commitments, and it’s the position he is best suited for with his skill set.

Overall, this looks like a diamond in the rough for Maryland. The Terps were the only major program to offer Stewart, but he has a lot of skills and anytime you can get a prospect out of Florida, you’re happy.
