With National Signing Day just three weeks away, Jake Funk isn’t wasting any time.

According to InsideMDSports, Funk will enroll early on Jan. 20. The Damascus (Md.) running back finished his high school classes and will begin his college career several months ahead of schedule.

Quince Orchard (Md.) defensive tackle Adam McLean and Australian punter Wade Lees will also be enrolling early. McLean was originally part of the 2015 class, but was academically ineligible this past season.

Funk is a three-star recruit that had an extremely successful high school career. He is rated as the No. 92 running back and the 34th best player in the state of Maryland.

Funk is arguably one of the most talented running backs in the state, along with DeMatha’s Lorenzo Harrison. He also was the All-Met Offensive Player of the Year along with the Maryland Gatorade Offensive Player of the Year.

The Damascus tailback rushed for 2,866 yards and 57 touchdowns (a Maryland state record) as a senior. Funk led the Hornets to a Class 3A state championship, which culminated in a 55-14 win over Dundalk.

In the Class 3A title game, Funk rushed for a mind-boggling 270 yards and a state record seven touchdowns. It was Damascus’ first state championship since 2007.

Funk, who had 13 offers including one from Wisconsin, may not be the biggest running back at 5’11, but he has the determination to make an immediate impact for the Terrapins.

With the graduation of Brandon Ross and the uncertain future of Wes Brown, Funk and Harrison should help shoulder the load along with sophomore Ty Johnson. Johnson rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman.

It’s great to see Funk get on campus so early, which will helping with him learning offensive coordinator Walt Bell’s dynamic offense.
