Two big-time Maryland targets, five-star Diamond Stone and four-star Esa Ahmad, released their top five schools. As Maryland was expected to make the cut for Ahmad, Stone is being recruited by almost every powerhouse in the country, and the Terps seem firmly in it.
Stone has a top five of Maryland, Duke, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State and UConn. What’s surprising is that Marquette, a school that many had been a frontrunner months ago, did not make the cut for the skilled 6’10” center. Nonetheless, Stone has said before that he loves Mark Turgeon’s history with developing big men. Turgeon has developed DeAndre Jordan and Alex Len into dominant big men, and Stone sees that. It’ll still be an uphill climb for Maryland, as Duke, Wisconsin and UConn are all very big threats to Maryland. Depending on when his official visit is, Maryland could make noise.
As for Ahmad, he’s easily Maryland’s top target and there is no denying why. A versatile three/four, Ahmad makes the Maryland offense quick and allows them to play an up-tempo offense. A high character player, Maryland has put themselves in a great position with him, and it helps that Ohio State has yet to really recruit him hard. The Crystal Ball currently reads 92 percent for the Buckeyes, with one pick for West Virginia and Maryland each. The Crystal Ball doesn’t show how close Maryland is, but the Terps have a big weekend when Ahmad takes his official visit to College Park. Ahmad will also take his official to West Virginia on September 19, according to recruiting scout Chip Miller (@BLUEChip_Miller).
To put things in perspective, Maryland has made the cut for Stone, Ahmad and three-star point guard Justin Robinson. The 2015 could end up becoming very talented and make the 2015-16 season even more exciting if things play in Maryland’s favor.
