On Saturday night the Maryland men’s soccer team hosted the Delaware Blue Hen in their final exhibition game of the 2014 season. The Terps took a 1 nil lead following a goal from George Campbell, but Delaware answered in the first half to tie the game, and then scored the game winner late in the second half.
Sophomore goal keeper Zack Steffen did all he could to keep the Terrapins alive, but a rainy night made his job difficult. Junior Joe Dipre from England, slotted the game winner past Steffen with twenty minutes to play in the game. Steffen came up with a couple of saves late to keep the Maryland deficit at 1.
Freshman George Campbell scored his first of what should be many goals in the first half. Campbell was the Gatorade Boy’s Soccer Player of the Year in the state of Maryland last season. He was named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Freshman XI preseason after a 23 goal and 15 assist senior year at McDonogh High School.
Maryland’s offense is a cause for concern this season after losing Patrick Mullins and Schillo Tshuma to Major League Soccer. The Terrapins scored three first half goals earlier in the week at Akron in their first exhibition game, but like Saturday night they failed to score in the second half. Delaware was picked to win the Colonial Athletic Conference after returning many of the players from an NCAA Tournament team last season.
Friday August 29th is the official season opener for Maryland as they travel to #14 Louisville in a battle of Old vs New ACC teams. The home opener at Ludwig Field is Monday September 1 vs #17 Coastal Carolina. Coach Cirovski will need his team to rebound quickly from the loss to the Blue Hens as Maryland starts the season off with two tough out of conference games.
On Monday in Akron, Maryland wore new black versions of the Pride jerseys, on Saturday they busted out gold versions of the Pride jersey, pictured below thanks to the official twitter page of the team (@MarylandMSoccer).
