Get your popcorn ready: the Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team will face off against the Wagner Seahawks for their home opener of the 2014 season.
The Seahawks will be the first Terps home opponent in both a new conference as well as in the newly rebranded Xfinity Center. Comcast opted to change the name this offseason, while the Terps are moving from the ACC to the Big Ten after 61 years in the previous conference.
In Wagner, the Terrapins get an opponent that finished 19-12 last season while playing in the Northeast Conference. The Seahawks advanced to the Northeast Conference semifinal game before bowing out to Mount St. Mary’s last year. As a program, Wagner has only made it to the NCAA tournament once; in 2003 they lost to Pittsburgh in the first round 87-61. Though the Seahawks lose their top two scorers from the season prior, they’ve won 19 or more games the past three seasons, and upset then-No.15 Pittsburgh on the road in 2011.
That gives Maryland four certain dates on their schedule now. Just yesterday it was announced that the Terrapins would face off against Wisconsin for ESPN’s “Super Tuesday” game at Xfinity Center on Feb. 24. It was also announced earlier this summer that they would go up against Virginia in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge on Dec. 3, and that they would play Arizona State in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City on Nov. 23.
The rest of the schedule is expected to be released relatively soon, so be on the lookout. Either way, it’s good to know at least some of the opponents.
