Improving their non-conference schedule, Maryland has finally announced their matchup with Arizona State for the CBE Hall of Fame Classic. The game will be played on November 24 at 7 p.m. and televised on ESPNU. This comes just a day after Maryland coaching legend Gary Williams will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City.
Arizona State is a good matchup for the Terps and find themselves in similar territory as Maryland. The Sun Devils lost five seniors to graduation, Jahii Carson to the NBA, and three bench players to transfer. Compared with Maryland’s five transfers and release of Trayvon Reed, both teams will look completely different this year as they will look to re-identify themselves in 2014-15.
Along with their matchup against Virginia for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Maryland’s non-conference schedule improves with the Arizona State game, as they now have two games against 2013 NCAA tournament teams. Every team has their cupcake games early in the season, so the next step is seeing which high-major schools Maryland will schedule to finalize their non-conference schedule. It helps that regardless of the outcome against Arizona State, Maryland will get to face two quality teams in either Iowa State or Alabama for the championship or consolation game.
With the induction of Gary Williams into the Hall of Fame, Maryland has an opportunity to create a memorable couple of games that can certainly give them momentum for their tough conference schedule in the Big Ten. Winning both games will help give Maryland two good non-conference wins to build their resume, which will come in handy come Selection Sunday.
