Big Ten Network Analysts Peg Maryland As Surprise Team

While Maryland has been given an extremely tough schedule in their inaugural season in the Big Ten, many still like the Terrapins chances in 2014.

As part of’s “Countdown to kickoff” coverage on their website, three of the Big Ten Network’s analyst answered the question of who could be a surprise team in the East Division. Tom Dienhart and Sean Merriman (not that Shawne Merriman) both responded with Maryland. Both analysts list the prolific offense as one of the main reasons for picking the Terps.

Dienhart adds that Maryland returns nine starters on defense, and says that the Terps could be the third-best team in the East Division.

Many may not realize that the Terps ranked 21st in the entire country in total defense. Michigan, Michigan State, Rutgers, and Wisconsin are the only Big Ten teams that rank ahead of Maryland in total defense. They were also 45th in the country in defending the run as they only allowed 3.72 yards-per-rush.

The Terps definitely have the potential to have a very strong season in their first year in the Big Ten. We’ll have tons of preview content surrounding the team in the coming weeks leading up the season opener against James Madison!
