2016 5-Star DE Shane Simmons Has Top Five

2016 DeMatha defensive end Shane Simmons, ranked 31st in the country on 247Sports, released his top five today.

Florida State, Penn State, Alabama, Ohio State and Maryland all made the cut for the second-best defensive end in the country. Currently, the Crystal Ball predictions read Florida State as the favorite.

However, Simmons admitted to TerrapinStationMD that he “already knows” which school he will pick.

“I’ve visited every school I wanted to since eighth grade going into my junior year,” Simmons said earlier today. “It’s been a long process, I’m ready to commit.”

Simmons added that he has not been to Maryland recently, but he may make the trip up.

“I like Maryland because they’re close to home,” said Simmons, who plays football just miles from Maryland at DeMatha Catholic. “And the fact that they’re in the Big Ten and they have good coaches.”

While it may seem that Maryland may not have as much going for them as their competition, Simmons said that staying close to home has been an important factor in his decision.

As it stands, Simmons currently does not have a set date on when he will make his commitment. The top-ranked player out of Maryland and second-best strong-side defensive end in the country (per 247sports) has been considered a heavy Florida State lean to this point, and the Terps have lots of work to do. Still, it’s nice to be able to recruit in your backyard, and it doesn’t get any closer than DeMatha. He still has interest, which means Maryland still has a chance.
