Last year, Maryland fans began drooling over the consensus top-six recruit in the 2015 class.
As time progressed, Wisconsin native Diamond Stone seemed like more of a longshot than a legitimate target. With schools such as Kentucky, Duke, Michigan State and Wisconsin pressing hard for him, Stone seemed destined for a consistent top-25 program.
However, Josh Stirn of InsideMDSports broke the news on Thursday night of his glowing comments of the Maryland staff and his recruiter, Bino Ranson.
Via IMS, Stone said, “coach Bino – I love him to death,” he said. “He calls me all the time, talks to me all the time. He’s my guy.” Stone added he would like to visit Maryland, which would be a huge step for the Maryland staff. Stone has previously said that he loves Maryland because of the staff’s development of former terp Alex Len.
With a point guard (either Justin Robinson or Kevin Dorsey) and a wing (Jordan Murphy or Esa Ahmad) in this class, Maryland would still have three scholarships available for the 2015-16 season barring any transfers or attrition.
Maryland still has ways to go with Stone, but the fact that he’s already high on Maryland is big.
Coach Mark Turgeon has yet to land his first five-star since taking over at Maryland, and Stone would be a huge pickup. I’ll reiterate that Maryland is certainly not the front-runner, but they have a fighting shot and I will not rule him out.
