Jameel Cook Commits To Maryland

Because you didn’t need enough commits, Jameel Cook makes it 13 for the class as the Texas safety made it official today as he announced his commitment to the Terps. As the staff will only take one safety in this class, Cook told me he spent the day contemplating the decision to commit. “They’ve always been my top school and it felt like it was home so I wanted to make it official.

Cook is a 2-star safety on Rivals, but a 3-star on 247Sports and ranked the 95th best safety in the country. He committed to Maryland over a number of offers, but Kentucky and Missouri were the two schools pushing him the hardest throughout his commitment. But in the end, Randy Edsall and his staff prevailed.

Cook cited his relationship with defensive coordinator as a factor in his recruitment. “He’s a DB coach and will put me in situations where I can make plays and go get the ball.” And that he can do. Cook brings more depth to this star-studded defense as he and Josh Woods will make big plays in the backfield. It was previously reported that Cook had Maryland as his favorite “for now,” as Missouri and Kentucky were heavily recruiting him. But Cook said he’s 100% committed to Maryland. “I wanted to make it official and then take my visit next week to check everything out.” With just one spot in the class for a safety, Jay Stocker looks to be off the radar for the staff now, but Cook brings versatility and a knack for the ball to the superb defense coached by Brian Stewart.

As for now, Cook is focused on his senior year. “I have another year to get better, bigger, faster, stronger and smarter, but I can make plays and take the ball.” But come fall 2015, get to know Cook better and jump on his bandwagon early because he has the ability to make a big impact. Yet another superb commit to this 2015 class that is turning out quite nicely. And with a secondary of Kareem Ali, Will Likely, Josh Woods and now Cook, Maryland may be the college version of LOB.

With Cook’s commitment, Maryland now has the 26th best class on 247Sports. That’s almost 50 spots better from a month ago. Job well done.
