2015 Gonzaga QB Nick Johns confirmed to me that a commitment is imminent. He recently took visits to PSU, UVA and UMD, but it seems that Johns is unwilling to wait for a Penn State offer. “Penn State has told all their quarterback targets that they’re waiting a decision from [2015 QB] Brandon Wimbush before they offer any other quarterbacks.” Johns said that their strategy was a little ridiculous and that he is unwilling to wait around for them to make a decision. This is huge in terms of his recruitment because if the Nittany Lions did offer, I think Penn State would grab the 3-star QB. But now, it’s down to UVA and UMD. Johns spoke very highly of UVA’s coaching staff. “They’ve told me that no one can develop me as a quarterback better than [the UVA staff].” Johns credited the ability to play early at UVA as a big factor in his decision. Although he does like UVA a lot, he also said the same about his relationship with Maryland. “I think I fit in their offense well and I have a great relationship with their coaching staff.” Johns added that Locksley will adjust the offense based on their quarterback situation. “CJ Brown is more of a runner, so there’s more read options in their offense.” Right now, it may seem very close and Johns added there’s not one school in front of another. Johns will take trips down to each school with his father, who played football at Penn State, before making a decision. Johns said he will commit within the next couple of weeks. Right now, the Crystal Ball reads 100% Maryland, and I think that will stick. In terms of his impact on Kai Locksley, arguably most debated prospect on Maryland’s board, I think this will impact Kai and not Maryland. What I mean is, Maryland will undoubtedly still heavily recruit Kai. However, assuming Johns does indeed commit to Maryland, Kai may look elsewhere. There’s a lot of buzz about Kai going outside Maryland for college, but what we do know is that he is just taking visits elsewhere. Although there were reports that FSU and Auburn led for his services, he confirmed this weekend that everyone is even in this interview. If Kai wants to come to Maryland, he has a spot. But if this class only includes Johns, that is certainly not a bad thing.
