Maryland Football VS Boston College Halftime Thoughts

  • The Terrapins defense has been keeping them in this one, to say the least. I mentioned it before the game, but Maryland’s best chance of stopping Boston College would be to plug them up on first down and force them to pass. They’ve done more or less exactly that, and the team should really be commended for it. Williams has struggled to get out of the backfield on most first down plays, which brings Rettig on to pass a little more. That’s what Maryland wants out of this game, and even though Williams has 99 yards and a touchdown, the stat line is completely deceiving since the TD run occurred when BC took over on the seven yard line.Meanwhile, Rettig has as many yards as he does completions (one), and that’s a credit to how well the Terps corners are pressing their receivers, and how amazing the pass rush has been. Maryland’s front is strong, very strong, and if they can continue to get Rettig to throw, they should be in great shape.Case in point? BC is 0-7 on third down conversions.
  • Penalties, guys. They’re a fantastic way to lose a game, and a great way to relinquish great field position. Unfortunately, Maryland has been shooting themselves in the proverbial foot with offensive penalties. And not just run of the mill holding penalties, weird ones that shouldn’t happen.Offensive pass interference, ineligible receiver downfield, illegal throw downfield, you name it. The Terps only have four penalties, but those four have been damning so far. Maryland would do very well to eliminate those as soon as possible if they want to stay in this game.
  • Give credit to the offense on one thing, though, they’re maintaining control of the clock, and that could make all the diffference in the world down the line. A great way to stop a running back on a cold day? Keep him off the field. Even though Maryland has been relatively poor in their effectiveness offensively, they’re still extending drives. If thy managed to convert more than one third down in seven tries, they might be on for even longer.Their real issue has been the penalties. Eliminate those and there’s a good chance they have 24 points instead of ten. Brown has looked pretty effective despite taking some bad hits in the backfield as the O-line collapses.
