After providing the spark that Maryland needed in the form of a 63-yard punt return touchdown, Terrapins cornerback William Likely was named ACC Co-Rookie of the Week.
Likely totaled 179 return yards (106 punt, 73 kick) and a remarkable touchdown against the Hokies. It was Maryland’s first punt return touchdown since Oct. 2, 2010. The former Glades Central star currently ranks ninth in the ACC with a 13.8 punt return average and has 14 returns for 193 yards, which ranks seventh in the conference. Likely also excels on kickoff returns and has the second-most return yards with 484 (25.5 yards-per-return).
This is a fantastic accomplishment for a guy who muffed a few punts early in the season and didn’t see a ton of playing time. However, even before star wideout Stefon Diggs went out with a season-ending leg injury, Likely was regarded as one of the top returners in the ACC.
He also has turned in a great year on defense due to the injuries to cornerbacks Dexter McDougle and Jeremiah Johnson. Likely has totaled 46 tackles (34 solo), four passes defended, and an interception. The freshman cornerback has done everything that he’s been asked of him and so much more. Likely has turned out to be one of Maryland’s most important players this season and this is an honor well-deserved.
