There is a ton of buzz surrounding the Maryland men’s soccer team heading into this season. In addition to a bevy of other accolades, the Terps have been selected as the top team in the ACC preseason poll that is voted on by all 12 conference coaches.
Maryland had 142 points in the balloting while North Carolina came in second place with 122 points. Wake Forest, Notre Dame, and Virginia rounded out the top five. Maryland also received 10 first place votes which led the way. The Terps return several key pieces including MAC Hermann Trophy winner Patrick Mullins and are definitely poised for another run at a National Championship.
It certainly won’t be a cakewalk for the Terps as there are six ACC squads that are ranked in the 2013 NSCAA Preseason Top 25. Maryland (#2), North Carolina (#4), and Notre Dame (#7), Wake Forest (#17), Syracuse (#20), and Virginia (#25) are a six-pack of great teams and they all play in the same conference. The Terps have a tough road to the postseason with their conference schedule, but it could also have them better prepared for postseason play if they can get through ACC play without suffering many significant injuries.
The Terps have one more exhibition game on Saturday, August 24 when they will face off against St. John’s at home. They will travel to face Stanford on Friday, August 30 to begin the regular season.
