Stop me if you’ve heard this before…The Maryland Terrapins officially lost another starter for the remainder of the season today when word came out that “Do-it-all” senior LB Demetrius Hartsfield has suffered a torn ACL.
When the injury occurred towards the end of the first half on Saturday my colleague and I shared the same thought process. We weren’t positive if it was a knee or an ankle but judging by the fact Hartsfield was helped off the field without really putting any pressure on his leg we knew the prognosis wouldn’t be good. Torn ACL’s had already decimated the Terps at the QB position. Naturally, with Maryland’s luck this season the team “QB” on the defensive side would suffer the same fate as the signal callrs on offense.
It is a shame that the senior’s college career will be cut short by injury. Hartsfield finished his senior season with 78 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one interception. For his career Hartsfield will go into the records books having finished his Terrapins career with 338 tackles, 8.5 sacks and two interceptions.
While the productivity on the field will absolutely be missed the leadership he provided for the Terps defense will be hard to duplicate. It seems to have been the motto for this team all season and I’d say in wake of the loss of Hartsfield for the final three games of the season the phrase “Next man up” seems applicable again for Maryland.
