Looks like Maryland has a new center. The Terps have added 7’2″ Ukrainian big man Olexiy “Alex” Len to the squad, according to IMS.
Len still has to be cleared academically to play this year, but he is already enrolled at College Park. For a squad with only three scholarship big men in James Padgett, Berend Weijs and Ashton Pankey, the Terps can use all the help they can get.
In the 2010 U-18 European Championships, Len averaged 16 points per game, 11.4 rebounds per game, and 4.3 blocks per game, leading the tournament in blocks and offensive rebounds.
It will be interesting to see whether Len can overtake Padgett for the starting center job. Either way, it gives Mark Turgeon another big body to play with in the paint, allowing the Terps to not always rely on a four-guard set.
We look forward to seeing the first “From Len to Len” sign at Comcast this year. Welcome to College Park, Alex.
