After a delay that lasted close to two hours, the #5 Maryland women’s soccer team opened their season with a win Friday, defeating the #22 Minnesota Golden Gophers 1-0 at Ludwig Field in College Park.

Junior midfielder/forward Danielle Hubka scored the only goal of the game when Megan Gibbons passed the ball to Becky Kaplan, who was able to send it past the Minnesota defense and to Hubka, who sent it into the net. An all-conference freshman selection two years ago, it was the tenth goal of Hubka’s career.

The game started at close to 9 p.m. due to storms in the area. Maryland’s next game comes this Monday, Aug. 22, on the road against Loyola (Md).
