A day after securing the commitment of quarterback Caleb Rowe, the Maryland coaches are at it again – picking up 2012 defensive back Alvin Hill from Luella High School (Locust Grove, Ga.).
There are only so many times you can call relatively unknown prospects sleepers, but here we go again. Hill doesn’t even have a profile on Scout or Rivals (yet, but I’m sure they’re working on that), and he’s got the standard 45 rating with no stars on ESPN. He’s listed at 5’11” and 176 by ESPN, and they have him as a cornerback.
For a corner, that’s good size. It’s almost reminiscent of Mario Rowson (now a linebacker), who former D-coordinator Don Brown was just ecstatic about due to his height. He is the also the younger brother of Virginia Tech cornerback Derrick Bonner.
Hill picked Maryland over Tennessee…Chattanooga, but he did receive interest from the real Tennessee and Mississippi State, among others. The corner had six interceptions last year (a school record) with 42 tackles and five pass breakups, and is the first-ever permanent team captain of Luella.
He’s apparently a good man-to-man cover corner, and has good hands – he also plays receiver.
Hill is now the sixth player in Maryland’s 2012 recruiting class. We’ll keep you updated if we learn anything more about the guy.
