#1 Maryland was able to claim the ACC regular season title after slipping past the #4 North Carolina Tar Heels 12-9 Saturday afternoon in College Park.
Despite the Terps (13-0, 4-0 ACC) being down dynamic scorer Karri Ellen Johnson with a concussion, Maryland was able to get the firepower from Katie Schwarzmann and Laura Merrifield, who scored four goals each to clinch Maryland’s 23rd consecutive win and regular season crown.
The Tar Heels (10-3, 3-1 ACC) were able to keep it close, only being down one at the halftime break. But Maryland put together a nice 3-0 run to start the second half by Sarah Mollison, Brandi Jones, and Alex Aust that all proved too much for the Tar Heels to overcome.
Saturday’s clinching of the regular season title marks the fifth consecutive year the Terps have had at least a share of it. Maryland plays in its Senior Day Wednesday, Apr. 13 at 7 p.m. against #12 Princeton.
Player of the Game: Katie Schwarzmann and Laura Merrifield share the award for their outstanding play in the absence of Johnson. Together the pair accounted for eight of the Terps 12 goals and only gave up one turnover between the two.
