In terms of 2011 basketball recruits, there’s not much left – it seemed that Desmond Hubert, who is visiting UNC this weekend, was the only legitimate target left for the Terps. There’s been a small amount of talk about guys like Matt Giorski, Anthony Estes, Steele Davis, Juanya Green, and Kelvin Amayo, but Hubert is the only guy left in the 2011 class that the Terps have offered a scholarship to.
Apparently, there’s a new guy in the mix, Jared Guest. Guest is a 6’7″ power forward from Charis Prep in North Carolina. He reclassified from 2010 (he used to go to Richland Northeast in South Carolina), and is a three-star prospect according to Scout and two-stars according to ESPN.
He’s not as good of a prospect as Hubert, but he’s more of a pure four than Martin Breunig. Problem is, he’s Berend Weijs-skinny. At the same height as Dino Gregory, he’s a full 40 pounds lighter at 190. The schools on his list include George Washington, Xavier, Georgia, Western Kentucky, East Carolina, and Clemson – not exactly the same caliber as the teams Maryland beat out for Nick Faust, Sterling Gibbs, or even Breunig.
I was able to find stats for his junior year – he averaged 6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game.
We haven’t really been able to find a highlight tape on this guy. The Terps apparently haven’t offered him a scholarship yet, so we’ll see what happens. Honestly, if this is the only option left, Gary Williams should just hold the scholarship over for the 2012 class.
We’ll keep you updated as always.
