Per IMS, Randy Edsall and co. have landed their first commitment for the 2012 football class, and it’s a good one, folks – Good Counsel offensive tackle Mike Madaras.

It’s important for Maryland to be able to recruit from the big time high schools in the area – your DeMathas, your Bishop McNamaras, and your Good Counsels – and this is a very good start.

Madaras is listed at 6’6″, 280, good enough for a kid with a year of high school left (also, he’s only 16, so that gives him that much more room to grow). Most impressively, however, he runs a 4.8 40, which is pretty damn fantastic for an O-Lineman.

I’m always a believer in using what schools offered a prospect as a big judge of the caliber of player he is. Madaras lists offers from Georgia Tech, NC State, Pitt, Purdue, Stanford, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, among others. Not too shabby.

Enough of that, let’s cut to the tape.

Obviously his quickness is his greatest asset, but he has a fair amount of strength and very good blocking technique. Look at the 0:55 mark for the destruction of a DeMatha player, and look at 1:10 as he opens up a fantastic hole. For Maryland to get this kind of commitment this early in the process is a huge sign of progress.

Keep doing your thing, Randy.
