The #1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team and defending national champions took the first step in repeating after cruising in their season opener against the Richmond Spiders 18-7 Sunday in Virginia.
Maryland (1-0) got off to a fast start, scoring the first goal of their season 58 seconds into the game and the games first nine. Richmond finally scored with 12 minutes left in the first half and continued to chip away at the Terp lead behind Mary Flowers’ hat trick. Suddenly nursing a 12-7 lead, Maryland called a well timed timeout and proceeded to score the final six goals of the game.
The Lady Terps now travel to Delaware Wednesday Feb. 16 to take on the Fighting Blue Hens.
Player of the Game: Way to open up the season! Karri Ellen Johnson not only led the Terrapin attack, but she tied the school record of goals in a game with seven. When you score close to half of your team’s goals you can’t argue for anyone else.
