The #18 Terrapins scraped their way to a 12th straight win after defeating a pesky Saint Joseph’s team 74-60 in Philadelphia Sunday afternoon.
Maryland(14-1) needed a career high 22-points from freshman forward Alyssa Thomas, as well as a pair of double doubles from Diandra Tchatchouang (12 points, 13 rebounds) and Lynetta Kizer (11 points, 10 rebounds) to pull away from the Hawks (10-5).
Both teams traded buckets for most of the first half, with the Terps even finding themselves down six points with a little over 11 minutes to go. But an eight-point burst from Thomas allowed the Lady Terps to take a 32-29 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Terps were finally able to pull away after an Anjale Barrett layup put them up 50-41 with less 13 minutes left in the game. At the buzzer Maryland once again had another big night on the boards, out-rebounding their 14th opponent in 15 games, 48 to 30, and scoring 32 points in the paint to the Hawks’ 12.
Maryland now opens up their ACC schedule with a huge televised game in Durham, N.C against the #3 ranked Duke Blue Devils on Thursday, Jan. 6th at 7pm.
Player of the Game: The freshman from Pennsylvania continues her impressive play this season as Alyssa Thomas had a career high scoring night with 22 points and five boards. If she continues throughout ACC play, Thomas will be a serious contender for the ACC Rookie of the Year award.
