Faust Officially Commits

Maryland’s top basketball target, Baltimore shooting guard Nick Faust, announced his intention to attend the University of Maryland today on ESPNU. This is a huge get for the Terps, and brings a new jingle:

We wish you a Merry Faustmas,

We wish you a Merry Faustmas,

We wish you a Merry Faustmas,

And a happy Baru year (hopefully).

So how does the lineup for 2011 look with Faust in place? Let’s check it out.

At point guard, Pe’Shon Howard will probably have the job, but Sterling Gibbs will definitely challenge him for the starting position.

Jordan Williams has center on lock, so that leaves three spots for three players. The problem? There’s no power forward among them. Faust (a shooting guard) will probably play with Sean Mosley (also a shooting guard) and Mike Parker (a small forward) also getting starting jobs, leaving Maryland with a small lineup, but a deadly one at that. Another option is playing James Padgett, Ashton Pankey, or a true freshman-to-be-named-later at the four, benching one of those three guys, although it’s hard to see who they would choose.

Now, the Terps can turn to their big man targets, namely Desmond Hubert, Adjehi Baru, Antwan Space, and Greg Lewis (who reportedly is down to Maryland and Rutgers). Landing two of these guys (I’m pulling for Baru and Space, although those are probably the two least likely) would be huge, and my bet is that would propel Maryland’s 2011 recruiting class to one of the top ten in the country, easily.
