Women's Soccer Preview – 09/05/2010

After two games in Knoxville, Tenn., the #10 Terps head back home to College Park to take on the Stony Brook Seawolves. Maryland is undefeated thus far, beating Iona, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kennesaw State and currently standing with a +13 goal differential. Ashley Grove leads the Terps with four goals and has three assists, while Caitlin McDowell has two goals and a team-high four assists and Jasmyne Spencer has three goals and one assist.

Stony Brook has had the complete opposite start to 2010. After finishing 2009 7-10-2 (5-2-1 in conference, good enough for fourth place) and being picked by the preseason coaches’ poll to finish second this season, the Seawolves had high expectations. After losses to Rutgers, Siena, Iona, and Marist, however, those hopes have been tempered for now. Coach Sue Ryan returns nine starters, including midfielder Colleen McKenna, the 2008 America East Rookie of the year, and midfielder Sa’sha Kershaw, who led the team with 14 points and had six goals last season.

The projected starters, per UMTerps.com, are Balogun at goalie, McDowell-Baker-Gibbons-Deegan at back, Hodak-Hastings-O’Sullivan-Dreska in the middle, and Spencer-Grove up front, so pretty much the same lineup coach Brian Pensky’s been using all year.
